Calorie Calculator

If you want to lose your weight effeciently, I advise you to go to this site, http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm to find how many calories you are currently burning per day!

Dairy products make you fat?

Eating more than our bodies need means we put on weight. So to keep a healthy weight it’s important to follow a balanced diet and keep physically active. The fat content of dairy products varies a lot, and much of this fat is saturated fat, which can raise cholesterol and is linked to obesity. So although eating dairy products won't make you fat, some are high in saturated fat and so you should only eat small amounts, or eat them less often. Or you could choose reduced-fat versions instead.

Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt are a really important part of a healthy balanced diet because they are great sources of protein and vitamins A, B12 and D. They're also an important source of calcium, which helps to keep our bones strong. This is important for everyone but if you're into sport you'll already know how crucial this is. The calcium in dairy foods is easy for the body to absorb. Cutting out dairy products can be bad for your health because you could be missing out on these nutrients.

Go for semi-skimmed or skimmed milk and low-fat yoghurts or fromage frais. These contain at least the same amount of protein, B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc as full-fat versions. They just contain less saturated fat.

Traffic light labeling

You're standing in a supermarket aisle looking at two similar products, trying to decide which to choose. You want to make the healthier choice but, as usual, you're in a hurry.
If you're in the grocery store in English speaking country, some of the products on sale have traffic light colors on the label to help you make your choice.

If we want to eat a healthy diet, one of the key things we should be doing is trying to cut down on fat (especially saturated fat), salt and added sugars.

With traffic light colors, you can see at a glance if the food you're looking at has high, medium or low amounts of fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt in 100g of the food. In addition to the traffic light colors, you can also see the amount of these nutrients that are present in a portion or serving of the food.

Red = High
Amber = Medium
Green = Low

So, if you see a red light on the front of the pack, you know the food is high in something we should be trying to cut down on.
If you see amber, you know the food isn't high or low in the nutrient, so this is an OK choice most of the time, but you might want to go for green for that nutrient some of the time.
Green means the food is low in that nutrient. The more green lights, the healthier the choice.

Many of the foods with traffic light colors that you see in the shops will have a mixture of red, amber and green. So, when you're choosing between similar products, try to go for more greens and ambers, and fewer reds, if you want to make the healthier choice.

If you want to choose a healthy diet, you should:

• base your meals on starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice
• eat lots of fruit and vegetables, which means try to go for at least five portions of a variety every day
• have some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, pulses, milk and dairy foods
• keep foods (and drinks) high in fat, especially saturated fat, sugars or salt to a minimum

Traffic light colors can help you get the balance right by helping you to choose between products and keep a check on the amount of foods high in fat, sugars and salt that you are eating. You can use the signpost labeling to help put you in control, so keep a look out for the colors on the front of food packs.

Trans Fat

What is a Trans fat?

Trans fat can be found in vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, candies, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, baked goods, and other processed foods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Small amounts of naturally occurring trans fat can be found in some animal products, such as butter, milk products, cheese, beef, and lamb.

What is the daily trans fat intake of Americans?

FDA estimates that the average daily intake of trans fat in the U.S. population is about 5.8 grams or 2.6% of calories per day for individuals 20 years of age and older. On average, Americans consume approximately 4 to 5 times as much saturated fat as trans fat in their diet.

How about Japanese?

According to Japanese Food Safety Commission, 20 years of age and older Japanese people’s the average daily in take of trans fats is about 0.7g~1.31g . If we compare with other countries we could know this amount is less. Which means, we have to regulate the amount of fats or oily foods.

According to Associated Press

Along with the ban, fast-food restaurants in New York City now must post calories on their menu. Few eateries, however, were complying with the calorie rule.
Most fast-food chains reversed their initial opposition to the trans fat ban and implemented it ahead of Sunday’s deadline, the city Health Department reported.
The first phase applies to oils, shortening and margarines used for frying and spreading — not to baked goods or prepared foods, or oils used to deep-fry dough or cake batter. These are covered by the second phase of the regulation, which takes effect on July 1, 2008.

Since New York passed the ban last year, Philadelphia, Montgomery County in Maryland and the Boston suburb of Brookline have followed its lead with similar measures that take effect later this year or in 2008. Several other states and cities including California and Chicago are also considering trans fat prohibitions.

Leaflets tacked onto the wall at one McDonald's said, "0 Grams Trans Fat and Still Loving the Taste!" But the restaurant kept the nutritional information off the menus, relegating it to a chart on the back of the fliers: 740 calories for a Quarter Pounder with cheese, 620 for a McFlurry.

McDonald's Corp. and Burger King Holdings Inc. were among the chains refusing to follow the new rule requiring certain fast food restaurants to list calorie counts next to menu items in type that is at least as large as the price.

Lowell Stephens, a manager at the Burger King, said the information had been posted in the restaurant for at least a year and a half.
"A lot of people know that it's there," he said. "They can read it any time."
But when the city does start cracking down, posting the calories on a chart on the wall won't be good enough.
"It needs to be at the point of purchase," Health Department spokesman Andrew Tucker said Sunday. "The point being that customers can actually see it when they're deciding what to order."

Childhood obesity

Childhood obesity has increased about 20% today.

This is because children now-a-days are usually spending time in front of television, computer, or playing video games. And not only from this, but children are also into high fat and sugar meals and snacks.
"A recent study reported that two-to-six-year-olds who watch television are more likely to choose food products advertised on TV than children who do not watch such commercials(http://life.familyeducation.com)." There should be less advertising on fast foods on television in order to keep the obesity percentage low.

It is pretty hard to start changing what children eat. And there are times that you want to grab some fast food in between school and on the way home. In that case, there are few ways to start reducing fat even from eating fast food.

These are some friendlier way to eat fast food meals:

"1.Pass on the “value-size.” When you supersize, the size of your fries isn’t the only thing that gets bigger.
2.Skip the sides. Eating a burger or sandwich by itself is often filling enough. If you do want a side, consider ordering a fruit cup or side salad. Most fast food restaurants now offer them.
3.Avoid double meat and bacon. A serving size of meat is 2-3 ounces — about the size of a deck of cards. You’re probably getting well over that with a single meat patty. Bacon is high in calories and fat with little nutrient content.
4.Try the grilled chicken sandwich. Poultry without skin is significantly leaner than the meats most fast-food companies use in their burgers.
5.Eat your sandwich open-faced. By eating only half the bun, you can eliminate unnecessary calories.
6.Try asking for a wheat bun. Some places offer a wheat alternative, some don’t. It never hurts to ask.
7.Skip the mayo and other calorie-laden dressings and sauces.
8.Drink water, diet soda or low-fat milk. Sodas are loaded with sugars, which have calories you don’t need(http://www.americanheart.org)."

U.S. Approves First Drug for Obese Dogs

According to Yomiuri News Paper, I found a interesting topic about obesity. From this topic I leaned that animal also could become obesity.

Not a remedy for overweight people, FDA warns

Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007 -- Recognizing that overeating isn't limited to beings with two legs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first prescription drug to manage obesity in DOGS.

Pfizer Animal Health (NYSE: PFE) announced that SLENTROL™ (dirlotapide), the first and only FDA-approved veterinary medication for the management of canine (relating to dogs) obesity, is now available by prescription in the United States. Pfizer is the obesity agent for dogs. The FDA cited surveys showing that up to 30 percent of U.S. dogs are overweight and about 5 percent are obese (more than 20 percent above ideal weight).

Overweight pets, like people, are at higher risk of health problems ranging from cardiovascular conditions and joint problems to diabetes, the FDA said.

To discourage use of the medication by people, Stentrol's label will warn that the drug is not intended for human use, should be kept away from children, and may cause adverse reactions in people, including abdominal pain (stomach), diarrhea, headache, nausea and vomiting.

5 A Day for Better Health Program

I was browsing through Dole website, and I found a interesting fact ^^
There is a 5 A Day for Better Health Program which Dole is also in part of. This is a national program to encourage people to eat 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables to keep ourselves healthy everyday.

"The national 5 A Day for Better Health Program, established in 1991 as a partnership between the National Cancer Institute and the Produce for Better Health Foundation, is the largest public-private partnership for nutrition and health in the United States and in the world'www.dole.com'."

I myself did not know about this until I searched around online to look for a healthy eating habit promotions. I was really surprised when I found this article. I think there should be more education promotions like this to increase children and adults to encourage people to stay healthy by eating fruits and vegetables.

25th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Gnathology and Occlusion

Sunday June 10th, I went to Tokyo International Forum in Marunouchi. With 11 stories above ground and 3 below, Tokyo's first convention and art center is a magnificent venue embracing a glass atrium and four buildings each housing a unique hall. 7 multi-sized halls, the Exhibition Hall and 33 conference rooms cater to a wide range of needs and requests. Each of these refined spaces boasts the finest equipment and facilities.
June 9th and 10th, 25th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Gnathology and Occlusion was held in the exhibition hall. The URL of this forum is
http://nichigaku-event.com/
This forum is for dentist, orthodontist, dental hygienist, company related to dentistry, and so on. The purpose of this forum was to discuss about past, recent, and future dental science. According to the medical dictionary (Merck Source), they defined gnathology, “the science that deals with the anatomy, histology, physiology, and pathology of the jaws and the masticatory system (the part which you chew foods) as a whole, including the applicable diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative procedures.”
From that forum I got the pamphlet about connection between metabolic syndrome and periodontal disease (gum disease). I know we’re group which is searching about “Obesity” but I think disease like metabolic syndrome and diabetes are similar diseases. Recent study has proved the connection between gum disease, brain infarction, cerebral accident, pneumonia, heart attack, premature birth, low-weight baby birth, and diabetes. This is because those bacteria of gum disease go around the body and affect you to become serious diseases.

Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis (your gums are red, swollen, and painful) and periodontitis (symptom is same as gingivitis), are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes is genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.
Gum disease is linked to diabetic control. People with poor blood sugar control get gum disease more often and more severely, and they lose more teeth than do persons with good control. Diabetes can cause blood vessels to thicken and become less elastic which decreases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and slows the removal of harmful waste. So if your blood sugar levels are not under control the sugar or glucose levels in your salvia increase and feed the bacteria in your mouth and set the stage for gum disease.

Kellogg raising nutrition!!!

According to Yahoo news, Kellogg decided to raise nutrition for cereals.
Kellogg cereals are loved by everyone around the world, (which includes me :D) such as rice krispies, froot loops, frosted flakes, and others.

*"The Battle Creek, Mich., company avoided a lawsuit threatened by parents and nutrition advocacy groups worried about increasing child obesity. Kellogg intends to formally announce its decision Thursday.(Sanner)"

I think this can help many children who loves to eat cereals. Cereals are known for a healthy breakfast meal, but to raise the nutrition for these will probably make more people love this.

How does other people see Obesity

I asked randomly to few people what they think about obesity & their impressions...
Most people mentioned that::
1. People who are considered to be obesity usually eat things randomly, and dont have any self management. Usually, people should think about exercizing after they eat.

2. Obesity people are unhealthy because most of the time they eat junk food. People should realize the fact that eating oily foods can end up being unhealthy. This can also result to high cholestrol and damage your health.

Most of the people that I interviewed said that eating healthy foods after their regular meals can prevent this from happening, such as fruits and vegetables. And try to eat foods that are well balanced.

Connection between Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome

The metabolic syndrome of obesity is hallmarked by central obesity and insulin resistance. It is well established that the complications of obesity, such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and insulin resistance are more related to the central distribution of body fat rather than the overall level of obesity. This is also the basis for Dr. Reaven to propose "Syndrome X" as the characteristics associated with insulin resistance and obesity. The chart below summarizes the central features and additional components of the metabolic syndrome of obesity.

Metabolic Syndrome of Obesity and Syndrome X Components

Central Obesity →Abnormal Blood Lipid Profile
Hyperinsulinemia → Hypertension
Hyperglycemia →Abnormal Glucose Tolerance
Procoagulant State →Inflammatory Markers: elevated levels of C-reactive protein
Vascular Abnormalities →Hyperuricemia

What is metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is a collection of heart disease risk factors that increase your chance of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The condition is also known by other names including Syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, and dysmetabolic syndrome. According to a national health survey, more than one in five Americans has metabolic syndrome. The number of people with metabolic syndrome increases with age, affecting more than 40 percent of people in their 60s and 70s.

What are these health risks?
You are diagnosed with metabolic syndrome if you have three or more of the following:
A waistline of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women (measured across the belly)
A blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or higher or are on blood pressure medications
A triglyceride level above 150 mg/dl
A fasting blood glucose (sugar) level greater than 100 mg/dl or are on glucose lowering medications
A high density lipoprotein level (HDL) less than 40 mg/dl (men) or under 50 mg/dl (women)
Who typically has metabolic syndrome?
People with central obesity (increased fat in the abdomen/waist)
People with diabetes mellitus or a strong family history of diabetes mellitus
People with other clinical features of “insulin resistance” including skin changes of acanthosis nigricans (“dirty skin” on the back of the neck or underarms) or skin tags (usually on the neck)
People with a triglyceride to HDL cholesterol ratio of > 3

What are the symptoms of metabolic syndrome?
Usually, there are no immediate physical symptoms. Medical problems associated with the metabolic syndrome develop over time. If you are unsure if you have metabolic syndrome, see your health care provider. He or she will be able to make the diagnosis by obtaining the necessary tests including blood pressure, lipid profile (triglycerides and HDL) and blood sugar.

What causes metabolic syndrome?
The exact cause of metabolic syndrome is not known. Many features of the metabolic syndrome as associated with “insulin resistance.” Insulin resistance means that the body does not use insulin efficiently to lower glucose and triglyceride levels. Insulin resistance is a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. Lifestyle factors include diet, activity and perhaps interrupted sleep patterns (such as sleep apnea).

If I have metabolic syndrome, what health problems might develop?
Consistently high levels of insulin and glucose are linked to many harmful changes to the body, including:
Damage to the lining of coronary and other arteries, a key step toward the development of heart disease or stroke
Changes in the kidneys' ability to remove salt, leading to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke
An increase in triglyceride levels, resulting in an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease
An increased risk of blood clot formation, which can block arteries and cause heart attacks and strokes
A slowing of insulin production, which can signal the start of type 2 diabetes, a disease that can increase your risk for a heart attack or stroke and may damage your eyes, nerves or kidneys

Types of Obesity

Apple and Pear are terms to describe the shape of a person's body with regard to where they store fat. Pears tend to store fat below their waists, usually on their hips and thighs. Apples store fat above their waists, around the mid-section.

Apple Type: The shoulders, face, arms, neck, chest and upper portion of the abdomen (stomach) are bloated. The stomach gives a stiff appearance. So also the arms, shoulders and breast. The back seems to be straight but the neck is compressed and there will be protruding chest because of the bulk in the stomach. The lower portion of the body the hips, thighs and legs are thinner beyond proportion in comparison with the upper part. In these persons the vital organs affected will be mostly the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs. Though this typed of obesity is found more in males it is common in females too. Those females, who are under hormone treatment for their menstrual abnormalities or after childbirth, have the risk to become this type of obesity. It occurs in females around menopause too due to thyroid gland's functional disturbance. In this type, the excess flesh is less likely to reduce especially in female than males. This type of obesity is a major risk for heart damage and heart disease due to high cholesterol.

Pear Type: In this type the lower part of the body has the extra flesh. This type of obesity is also common to both sexes though females are more affected. The flesh is somewhat flabby in the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and legs. The face and neck mostly give a normal appearance. In some persons, the cheeks may be drawn too. As these persons grow old the whole figure assumes a stooping posture and the spine is never erect due to the heavy hips and thighs. This vital organs affected mostly are the kidneys, uterus, intestines, bladder and bowls. But the functions of these organs some times have a direct effect on the heart. In this type of obesity, exercises or dieting will not help appreciably in reducing weight. Herbal medicine is the only hope. One should have more patience and undertake proper treatment to achieve the coal of reducing weight and preventing further weight again.

The third type: Besides apple and pear type, there is one more type of obesity. Some persons neither belong to apple or to pear category. Their whole body from head to toe looks like a barrel. Their gait is more to rolling rather than walking. The fat tissues in their body hinder the movement of all the internal organs and consequently affect their brisk functioning. For them any exercise is difficult due to the enormous size of the body. So such person should follow a strict in diet and do plenty of exercise. But herbal medicines and treatment will help successfully in reducing weight.

Weight gain in the area of and above the waist (apple type) is more dangerous than weight gained around the hips and flank area (pear type). Fat cells in the upper body have different qualities than those found in hips and thighs.

Busy people are increasing these days, so they don't cook by themselves and start using fastfood, I don't think that's not good life style.
To think about our health seriously I want to search more about obesity and make our eating habits better.

Causes of Obesity

Weight gain occurs when you eat more calories than your body uses up. If the food you eat provides more calories than your body needs, the excess is converted to fat. Initially, fat cells increase in size. When they can no longer expand, they increase in number. If you lose weight, the size of the fat cells decreases, but the number of cells does not.

Obesity, however, has many causes. The reasons for the imbalance between calorie intake and consumption vary by individual. Your age, sex, and genes, psychological makeup, and environmental factors all may contribute.

  • Genes: Obesity tends to run in families. This is caused both by genes and by shared diet and lifestyle habits. Having obese relatives does not guarantee that you will be obese.

  • Emotions: Some people overeat because of depression, hopelessness, anger, boredom, and many other reasons that have nothing to do with hunger. This doesn't mean that overweight and obese people have more emotional problems than other people. It just means that their feelings influence their eating habits, causing them to overeat. In some unusual cases, obesity may be used as a defense mechanism because of the perceived social pressures related to being more physically desirable, particularly in young girls. In these cases, as with the other emotional causes, psychological intervention may be helpful.

  • Environmental factors: The most important environmental factor is lifestyle. Your eating habits and activity level are partly learned from the people around you. Overeating and sedentary habits (inactivity) are the most important risk factors for obesity.

  • Sex: Men have more muscle than women, on average. Because muscle burns more calories than other types of tissue, men use more calories than women, even at rest. Thus, women are more likely than men to gain weight with the same calorie intake.

  • Age: People tend to lose muscle and gain fat as they age. Their metabolism also slows somewhat. Both of these lower their calorie requirements.

  • Pregnancy: Women tend to weigh an average of 4-6 pounds more after a pregnancy than they did before the pregnancy. This can compound with each pregnancy. This weight gain may contribute to obesity in women.

--The reason I chose this topic--

The reason why I chose this topic, is that while I was looking at news reports from different online newspaper articles, I came across to many articles that mentioned about obesity.

Recently, many people are becoming obesity from what types of food they eat. Fast foods are getting really convenient right now, and it is really cheap. Therefore, people choose to eat high caloried food as snacks and eat something else for meals.

Since fast foods such as hamburgers and nuggets are relatively cheap and is convenient, I started to wonder why eating these can lead to obesity, and what kind of ingredients these types of foods include.

BMI Let's Calculate♪♪♪

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. From BMI number, you could know if you are overweight or not. BMI is calculated by dividing a person's body weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared (weight [kg] height [m]2) or by using the conversion with pounds (lbs) and inches (in) squared as shown below. This number can be misleading for very muscular people and pregnant women or lactating women.

☆Calculating BMI for Adult☆

※Adults= 20 years old and older

[Weight (lbs) ÷ height (in)2 ] x 704.5 =BMI

1 pound≒453.6g 1 inch= 2.54cm

☆BMI ranges for adults☆

  BMI Weight Status
     Below 18.5 → Underweight

 18.5 – 24.9 → Normal
    25.0 – 29.9 → Overweight

30.0 and Above → Obese

What is Obesity??

According to Medical Encyclopedia, obesity is defined as:

Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. There are many ways to determine if a person is obese, but experts believe that a body mass index (BMI) is the most accurate measurement of body fat for children and adults.
Adults with a BMI greater than 30 are considered obese. Adults with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are considered overweight. There are exceptions. For example, an athlete may have a higher BMI but not be overweight.
Nearly two-thirds of the United States population is overweight. Anyone more than 100 pounds overweight is considered morbidly obese.

Some facts that you might not know...

Many people are probably familiar with the term "obesity. "
However, there are some things that we aren't aware of.

These are some facts about obesity that you might not know...

Did you know that::

1. A group of overweight Americans have sued several US fast food restaurants and accused them of serving food that causes obesity?

2. Fast food companies such as Mc Donald's and Burger King are currently participating in a campaign that tells young Americans to eat healthier diet?

(According to BBC News from July 25, 2002)

3. Between 1980 and 2000, obesity rates doubled for adults. About the 30% of the adults in the United States are obese.

4. Only about 25% of U.S. adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

(According to Centers for Disease Control website)

However, to prevent people from becoming obese, there are few good facts too!!

Did you know these facts too?::

1. Some companies no longer sell sweets and soft drinks to primary schools.

2. Some of the larger food companies are funding healthy eating and exercise promotional campaigns, through books, pamphlets and websites

3. The food industry is currently labelling foods with the levels of protein, fat, carbohydrate, sugar, salt and energy content per serve and per 100 grams of food - which is required by the law.

(According to Health Matter the Pulse)

However, we have to keep on telling people about these facts in order to keep them aware of how unhealthy eating habits can cause obesity. ^^

Introduction

Obesity is currently a worldwide problem. We all have and need fat tissue in our bodies but if you have too much body fat, the result is obesity. Obesity is not a sign of a person being out of control. It is the second leading cause of preventable death after smoking. It is a serious medical disease that affects over about one-third of the adults (approximately 60 million) in the United States, and about 14% of children and adolescents. The number of overweight and obese Americans has continued to increase since 1960, a trend that is not slowing down. Today, 64.5% of adult Americans (about 127 million) are categorized as being overweight or obese. Each year, obesity causes at least 300,000 excess deaths in the U.S.A, and healthcare costs of American adults with obesity amount to approximately $100 billion.

☆Reason why I chose this topic☆

I chose this topic, " Obesity" because I thought it is the most interesting one!! Also I'm strongly against obesity. That is why I like to learn about healthy life and I thoght this topic will help me.

Every day, I come to school by train. In the train there are many fat people. They take two seats because their bodies are big. I think most of middle-aged businessmen are obesity or metabolic syndrome>.<

For this project I will like to search about obesity completely. Also I'm kind of interested to know difference between obesity and metabolic syndrome.

The reason why I thought obesity is a serious problem (controversial ) because, obesity may cause increased sickness and earlier death. Also I heard that obesity people could die from heart attack .

I think recent society made people to eat a lot because they have lots of stress. By consuming more calories than we ough, those over calorie will become fat in our body. It is very hard to drop your weight after you gain.

This blog is about obesity. Many people become obesity because they don't know how to eat properly. You could eat fast food and junk food but don't eat too much.
